Gadolinium has the highest thermal neutron capture cross section and can be used as a reactor control material and a structural material to prevent nuclear radiation. Gadolinium can also be used as an additive for new magnetic materials yttrium iron garnet and yttrium aluminum garnet. The ultra-low temperature close to absolute zero (0.002K) can be obtained by magnetizing and cooling gadolinium salts. The compound of gadolinium can be used as the matrix material of phosphor powder, which is used to manufacture X-ray intensifying screen and projection TV device.
