Yttrium Metal: The addition of yttrium element can purify the alloy melt, reduce harmful elements such as Fe and Si, and improve the corrosion resistance of the alloy. On the other hand, yttrium and Mg form Mg24Y5, and as the addition of Y increases, the amount of Mg24Y5 also increases, which will accelerate the corrosion of magnesium alloys. However, when rare earth yttrium is added to the AZ series alloy, metal yttrium refines the grains, forms Al2Y phase with Al, and improves the corrosion resistance of the alloy. yttirum element is added by adding magnesium yttrium master alloy.

Zirconium: There are two functions of adding Zr to magnesium alloys. One is to refine the grains; the other is to remove impurities such as Fe in the alloy to improve the metallurgical quality. The finer the crystal grains in the alloy, the more the grain boundaries serving as corrosion inhibitors are, and the corrosion resistance of the alloy is improved. Zr reacts with Fe in the alloy melt to form Zr2Fe3 or Zr2Fe2, which reduces the Fe content in the alloy and improves the corrosion resistance of the alloy. Zirconium element can be added by adding magnesium zirconium master alloy.

Gadolinium: The effect of Gd on the corrosion properties of magnesium alloys depends on the number, size and distribution of the second phase containing Gd. When more than 2% Gd is added to ZK60, the corrosion of magnesium alloys is accelerated due to the increase of the second phase. When Gd is added to AZ91, Gd and Al form Al2Gd. Appropriate addition can improve the corrosion resistance of the alloy, but too high Gd content is not conducive to the corrosion resistance of the alloy. When adding 2% Gd to ZK40, the corrosion resistance of the alloy increases. When the addition is 6%-10%, the corrosion resistance of the alloy decreases; when the addition is 10%-12%, the corrosion resistance of the alloy increases. Gadolinium can be added by adding magnesium gadolinium master alloy.
